Livonia, Michigan’s eighth largest city, offers residents great schools, parks and recreation programs, three libraries, and even a symphony orchestra.
It was named the Second Best Kid Friendly Place in the Nation by Population Connection and one of the Top 50 Green Cities in the U.S. by Popular Science. The FBI even recognized it as Michigan’s Second Safest City.
Livonia has two quality school systems: Livonia Public Schools and the Clarenceville School District, as well as numerous parochial schools. There are also seven higher education institutions located here, including: Madonna University, Schoolcraft Community College, and Davenport University.
The Livonia Spree, a week-long birthday party for the city, is held annually and features a fireworks display, music, amusement rides and plenty of food. Spree is staffed by volunteers and raises money for non-profit projects and programs in the community.
Greenmead Historical Park allows visitors to check out some of Livonia’s original buildings from as far back at the 1820s and hosts Scottish Highland Games, summer and fall flea markets and special teas. This 95-acre site helps tell the story of Livonia’s past while preserving several locally-significant structures that would have been destroyed by development.
The city has more than 1,389 acres of recreational space including 60 parks, several play structures, and 6 miles of trails. The Community Recreation Center offers a state-of-the-art space for fitness with a rock climbing wall, water slide and lap pools, indoor track, skate park, volleyball courts, and much more.
Residents dine at J. Alexander’s, Old Mexico, Szechuan Empire, Claddagh Irish Pub and the locally-famous burger dive known as Bates. Shopping options include Laurel Park Place, Target, Sears, and Kohl’s.
Livonia is centrally located in Metro Detroit, and has easy access to critical expressways like I96, I275, and I94. It is just 25 minutes from Detroit’s Metro Airport.
Major employers in the area include Ford Motor Company, United Parcel Service, McLaren Performance Technologies, and St. Mary Mercy Hospital.
